The new Office of Senior Citizen Affairs building in Malabon

A heart for Malabonian seniors

December 9, 2021

Aside from ensuring quality education for students and nutrition of young Malabonians, among Mayor Lenlen Oreta's priorities are the senior citizens. Often, the elderly feel helpless and lonely – with that, Mayor Oreta created various projects that can make them feel useful and have a feeling of importance.

Some of Mayor Oreta's projects, like Ms. Grandma Malabon – a unique pageant that pitted the most charming and witty grandmothers who represented the various barangays of the city, is an optimistic take on how age is only a number.

Also, a workable program that benefits retirees or senior citizens breaks the stereotypes of aging by hiring them as active and vigilant safe-keepers in the barangays. Function as crusaders of road safety, discipline, and traffic rules are some of the employment opportunities given to the elderly. Having this feeling of empowerment made the retirees one with society again.

Malabon LGU also supports the mental health of Malabonian Lolos and Lolas. With the platform TikTok, they can have fun family bonding at home with the latest trends on social media.

With the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the vaccination of the elderly is also prioritized by the city government and provides their essential needs such as food and livelihood.

Mayor Oreta's administration's key development strategy is to transform Malabon into a progressive, “age-friendly” city that not only cares for the aged but also honors their contributions to the community.

As one reaches retirement age – privileges like discounts on transportation, food, healthcare, pension, and much more are a right for every senior. However, even at an old age, elderlies are still experiencing defeat – not having the right to have rights.

Addressing these unmet needs is becoming one of the urgent public priorities. To better assist the senior citizen in filing complaints or charges against any establishment, institution, or agency refusing to comply with the privileges under the law – Malabon City Government recently opened its newly built OSCA Building to provide better service and opportunities for the seniors.

"We had the blessing of our new building which will house our City Social Welfare and Development Department and Office of the Senior Citizens Office. This will be a huge help to hasten giving social services to every Malabonians" says Mayor Oreta.

The city government of Malabon is committed to being more proactive and attentive to the demands of its residents, owing to his great enthusiasm for reform and excellent governance.

In Malabon City, ‘aging is not lost youth’ but a new stage of adding life to their years and adding years to their life. By understanding the proper support and care of the elderly, they can live life to the fullest.
